2021 Book Covers We Loved!

Welcome to the 2021 Book Covers We Loved!

We here at Spine both love and hate these end of year round-ups. Love, because it gives us the chance to look back over the past twelve months and remind ourselves of all the wonderful covers that have been released into the world, and hate because we can't pick them all!

Some notable design trends that have stood out this year: splashy, rainbow hues paired with strong fonts, psychedelic abstraction, sunbursts, vintage-inspired typography, and, what designer Josh Durham has coined the “lost dog poster.” (A much better description than what I've been calling it thus far: “Square-centric magazine-esque layouts.” See Kelly Blair's cover for Ghosts for a great example.)

This list is comprised of agonising choices made by the esteemed Spine panel, including: Freelance Designer Mark Swan; Co-Founder of Chapman & Wilder, Cherie Chapman; Author of The Lost History of Dreams, Kris Waldherr; Author of the novels Girls in the Moon and The Looking Glass, Janet McNally; and Spine Editor, Vyki Hendy.

As with any cover design we feature in our publications, we encourage you to head to your local library and/or bookstore to view the work in its full splendor when possible.
